Class 1 Activities
Week ending 19th January
Jeh and Aadi recently returned from their trip to India and made a diary which they shared with the class.
This week Class 1 visited the Bowes Museum where we learnt about Toys of the Past. We had chance to play with some old toys, sketch them and then in the afternoon we made our own peg dolls.
Week ending 12th January
This week we have been continuing with our exploration of different materials. We have been investigating some common everyday materials to see how their shape can be changed and whether it would spring back into its original shape. We filled out a table with our findings.
Class 1 have been learning about Jesus as a teacher who told stories (parables) and that these were a way of teaching people about God. They have a moral to help people to understand that Jesus was teaching about love and forgiveness. We looked at the story of the Prodical Son and the children began to understand the meaning of a parable by talking about the characters in the story and identifying the character’s feelings. They then talked about their own feelings about friends and family and forgiveness, caring and kindness and about Christian’s understanding that God cares for them all. Reception children used puppets to re tell the story of the Prodical Son and they made pictures of the Prodical Son caring for the pigs and they could talk about how he was feeling (sad, scared, hungry, worried, tired). They were also able to identify how the father felt when his son left and when he returned by making faces with playdough and talking about them.
After they had worked together to sequence the story in the class big book, Year 1 used role play to retell the story of the Prodical Son. They also practised recognition of coins in the ‘inheritance bag’. Year 2 were able to recall the story and write it in their own words and talked about the meaning of the parable.
Week ending 15th December
This week we finished off our calendars which we are going to surprise our parents with this Christmas.
In maths we were measuring the weight of things and balancing them against other things to see which were heavier or lighter. We made Christmas trees by measuring lengths of card and arranging them so that they were in order of length.
Week ending 10th November
To celebrate Bonfire Night class 1 made some Catherine Wheel Cookies. We carefully measured out the ingredients and followed the recipe. They made the classroom smell delicious as they were cooking and then the best bit was sharing them out and taking them home to eat! Reception also made their cookies out of playdough. They shared out the playdough equally so it was fair for everyone and they made a really good job of putting the two colours together to make a spiral pattern.
Week ending 3rd November
This week we have had fun in French learning our colours through firework pictures. Here are just some of our sparkly pictures.
Week ending 20th October
Class 1 visited St James Church in the village this week. They took part in a christening service (role play) and enjoyed their learning experience.
This week we have been busy making vegetable people ready for our Harvest Festival Service at the Churches Together.
Week ending 6th October
This week in science we have been learning about how to keep healthy and clean. We learnt the correct way to wash our hands and understood why we must wash our hands regularly.
We listened to the story of “Owl Babies” and made owls of our own!
Week ending 29th September
Our new reception children have had their first recorder lesson with the rest of the class. We learnt how to blow gently!
Maisy brought in Hector the tortoise to tell everyone about her pet. Most children had never seen a tortoise, let alone touch one, before and it was so interesting to hear about Hector’s habits.
We have been talking about our special possessions in RE and children brought in a special book to share with others in the class.
Also, this week European Day was held on 25th September. This year we researched some of Europe’s Traditional Costumes. Some pupils in Class 2 made pictures of traditional costumes, others made powerpoints to share with the rest of the class. Class 1 had fun and games learning about the continents and some of the countries in Europe.
Week ending 22nd September
This week we have been busy measuring things. We measured our feet, hands, how tall we are and most of the things in the classroom! We also listened to the story of Rosie’s Walk and made maps so we could retell the story using different prepositions. Here are a couple of the maps our Y1s made.
Also, we have received a big thank you to all the children in Class 1 last year for taking part in the Christmas 2017 design a stamp competition. We did not win any prizes but we have received a big certificate as a thank you.
Week ending 15th September
This week class one have been playing ball games, Reception throwing and catching and Y1 and Y2 learning how to control a smaller hockey ball. We also measured ourselves, reception choosing tiles to see how tall they were and the class looked in the mirror carefully at themselves and painted a self portrait, noting their hair, eye and skin colours.
