Week ending 18th June
This week was Water Safety week. In literacy we thought of words to describe water using our senses: touch, sight and hearing. We used the adjectives we thought of to write a poem about water.
We learnt that we have to be safe by any kind of water and designed posters with a message to warn others of the dangers of being too close to the edge of water.
We also had a visit from the Kinetic Theatre who gave us an educational and funny show based on science linked to the planets.
Week ending 11th June
Class 1 have been observing and sorting objects that are natural, such as twigs, feathers, shells etc and then we made clay models of the objects and other things found in nature such as woodland animals. They textured the clay to make it look like the feathering and lines on them. The children painted them carefully, mixing the colours they needed for their models.

Although this week Class 1 have had tests, we did some gardening; clearing out the weeds and overgrown vegetable patch and then
We also took part in an inter-schools athletics day which we did very well in and everyone enjoyed the day.
In Maths, Reception were measuring which brand of nappy held the most water planting some seeds and seedlings, watering them and now waiting for them to grow!, making sure they filled cups accurately to be fair and then recording their results.

We have all entered a literacy competition this week! We had to write a riddle about an animal. Here are a couple of our entries. Can you guess the animal before you see the answer at the bottom?
We also had a trip to the Farm. We saw lots of animals, had a chance to feed some of them and had a tractor ride! Lots to write about in our News the next day!
Week ending 20th April
This week Class 1 have been looking at clouds and discussing the weather and the seasons. We have looked at the different shapes the clouds make as they cross the sky and Y1 and Y2 have used their imaginations to write an adventure story based on the cloud shapes they have seen, from unicorns to tractors! We painted pictures of the seasons and talked about why the weather is so important to farmers.
Week ending 29th March
This week class 1 took part in an inter-schools Ball Festival at Frosterley Primary school. There were lots of different activities to practise our skills and we all got a Certificate at the end for taking part.
In the classroom, the reception children sewed some cress seeds and we noticed they had germinated last week. It is growing really fast and soon we will have full grown cress for our sandwiches!

Year 2 were finding out about the properties of 3D shapes and built some interesting structures with them, learning the names of the shapes they used at the same time.
Week ending 16th March
Reception children were learning about repeated patterns and they decorated biscuits with icing in different repeated patterns. They also sewed some cress seeds – we will watch to see how they grow.
We were amazed to see how differently the bean seeds had grown in the cupboard to the ones on the side in the classroom!
Week ending 9th March
Our topic in class 1 this half term is “Up the Beanstalk”. We have been making moving pictures of Jack going up and down the Beanstalk and then we made up our own moving pictures using a sliding or a pivot mechanism. Jeh’s picture has a footballer kicking a ball up into the net, Lily’s has a unicorn taking off up into the rainbow. Reception made aeroplanes after hearing about the Wright brothers and their first flight.
Week ending 23rd February
This week we have celebrated Chinese New Year. We had a day with lots of activities relating to China or the New Year Celebrations. As it is the Year of the Dog, we made Dog masks and made a dog puppet. The other craft in the pictures is a dragon origami game.
Week ending 9th February
We have been working with materials this half term and this week we tested materials to see which ones would slow down the melting of ice. We put several materials between the ice and the hot pads to see which ones kept the heat from melting the ice.
Week ending 2nd February
This week class 1 worked on their glove puppets. Last week we drew the outline on hessian and sewed along the line. This week we have added different materials to finish them off according to our designs; we chose felt for clothing, pompoms for noses, googly eyes and pipe cleaners for ears. We measured how much material to cut beforehand. We found the best way to attach things was to use glue and let it dry. We were very pleased with how they turned out!
Week ending 26th January
In Science this week, we experimented to see what the changes would be if we toasted bread with a mark on made of either water or egg. We predicted correctly that the bread would not toast where the water had been, but we were unsure about what would happen with eggy mixture on it. We also observed the changes in egg when it is scrambled. Then we enjoyed tidying up afterwards and making sure there were no traces left of scrambled egg on toast!
We also started making glove puppets, drawing around our hands as a template and learning how to sew around the edge.
Week ending 19th January
Jeh and Aadi recently returned from their trip to India and made a diary which they shared with the class.
This week Class 1 visited the Bowes Museum where we learnt about Toys of the Past. We had chance to play with some old toys, sketch them and then in the afternoon we made our own peg dolls.
Week ending 12th January
This week we have been continuing with our exploration of different materials. We have been investigating some common everyday materials to see how their shape can be changed and whether it would spring back into its original shape. We filled out a table with our findings.
Class 1 have been learning about Jesus as a teacher who told stories (parables) and that these were a way of teaching people about God. They have a moral to help people to understand that Jesus was teaching about love and forgiveness. We looked at the story of the Prodical Son and the children began to understand the meaning of a parable by talking about the characters in the story and identifying the character’s feelings. They then talked about their own feelings about friends and family and forgiveness, caring and kindness and about Christian’s understanding that God cares for them all. Reception children used puppets to re tell the story of the Prodical Son and they made pictures of the Prodical Son caring for the pigs and they could talk about how he was feeling (sad, scared, hungry, worried, tired). They were also able to identify how the father felt when his son left and when he returned by making faces with playdough and talking about them.
After they had worked together to sequence the story in the class big book, Year 1 used role play to retell the story of the Prodical Son. They also practised recognition of coins in the ‘inheritance bag’. Year 2 were able to recall the story and write it in their own words and talked about the meaning of the parable.
Week ending 15th December
This week we finished off our calendars which we are going to surprise our parents with this Christmas.
In maths we were measuring the weight of things and balancing them against other things to see which were heavier or lighter. We made Christmas trees by measuring lengths of card and arranging them so that they were in order of length.
Week ending 10th November
To celebrate Bonfire Night class 1 made some Catherine Wheel Cookies. We carefully measured out the ingredients and followed the recipe. They made the classroom smell delicious as they were cooking and then the best bit was sharing them out and taking them home to eat! Reception also made their cookies out of playdough. They shared out the playdough equally so it was fair for everyone and they made a really good job of putting the two colours together to make a spiral pattern.
Week ending 3rd November
This week we have had fun in French learning our colours through firework pictures. Here are just some of our sparkly pictures.
Week ending 20th October
