Week commencing 14.12.20
We have been ding some Christmas crafts this week. We made snowmen and decorated stones!
Week commencing 30.11.20
This week has been an exciting week. Our elf came to visit us from the North Pole and is looking out for good behaviour! The Christmas tree is up and the school is looking very festive. Reception have been learning about weight and did a great job weighing some Christmas presents in the post office. We also made kites and talked about how they have to be light. Teddy, Senara and James made a pirate ship at breakfast club!
Week commencing 23.11.20
This week reception did a puppet show about ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid of The Dark’. We also were learning about length, we had a car race to see who could travel the furthest! Everyone then made a really long racetrack on the playground to play on. On Friday afternoon Flis read the whole class a book. Well done, excellent reading!
Week commencing 16.11.20
This week in maths Reception have been learning about addition and subtraction. We went on a dinosaur hunt and counted up all our dinosaurs! We also made a maths train and travelled all around the world, working out who was left on the train. Well done Reception!
Together we have all read ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid of The Dark’. We have been exploring different ways to describe the dark and learning about nocturnal and diurnal animals. Reception made some lovely pictures of Plop the owl and Year 1 and 2 made some pictures of the dark! Reception discussed what they do when they are scared in the dark and we listened to some lullaby’s to help us relax and feel safe.
We went on a sense walk, into the secret garden! We used our senses to describe our environment regarding what we could hear, see, taste, smell and feel. There was lots of interesting things for us to discover.
Week commencing 9.11.20
This week we have been focussing on Remembrance Day. We learnt about what remembrance day means and made our own poppies. Reception even made poppies from playdough! As well we made Christmas decorations ready to send off to lots of other schools all over Europe! On Friday it was children in need day. we joined in with Joe Wicks 24 hours of PE and did a 20-minute workout. We also did lots of Pudsey activities throughout the day. On Friday Class 1 learnt about Diwali, what it means and why people celebrate it. We made our own Happy Diwali cards.
Week commencing 2.11.20
This week we have been exploring our senses by making potions. We had lots of ingredients like wizards wee, zombie skin, zombie snot and bats blood! We have also been learning about bonfire night and why we celebrate bonfire night. Reception made some amazing rockets. Reception have also been making some music with lots of different musical instruments. Well done everyone!
Week commencing 19.10.20
This week in English, we have been learning about farm animals and nonfiction books. Everybody made a fact book about their favourite farm animals!
In maths reception have been learning about prepositions, we read Rosie’s walk to find out where she went. They looked the doll’s house, describing where the furniture was, well done!
We finished our ‘Tree of Life’ pictures, with pictures of all the things that are important to us. They look amazing!
Of course, we had lots of Halloween fun. We carved pumpkins, planted the pumpkin seeds and went on a treasure hunt. Everyone looked great in their costumes!
Week commencing 12.10.20
Reception have been learning about 3D shapes this week! We played guessing games, made models and looked at different shaped houses. In English we have read Farmer Duck and Little Red Hen. We did some role play of our own Farmer Duck stories, the farmer got arrested! We celebrated Harvest Festival this week, everyone learnt about why we celebrate Harvest and we sang some Harvest songs. In art we have been looking at pictures by Gustav Klimt, we are starting to make our own pictures!
Week commencing 5.10.20
This week we have been learning about parts of a tree. We had a look at lots of different kinds of seeds and learnt how they are distributed. We looked at acorns, conkers, rosehips and wild flower seeds. Everyone made their own sycamore ‘helicopter’ seeds and we tested how far they could fly! Reception made lovely pictures out of all the different kinds of seeds. In English we have been looking at lots of different poems. Reception and year 1 even recited two poems! Reception have been learning about repeating patterns in maths and painted their own repeating patterns!
Week commencing 28.09.20
James made a model of Hamsterley Village! Teddy and Senara both made excellent robots! This week we also made our own apple crumble. We picked the apples from the apple tree and chopped them up. The next day Mrs Sheil cooked the apples and showed everyone how to make a crumble topping. We all had it for our pudding and it was delicious! In English we have all been learning about rhyming, we read two books, oi frog and oi dog. We thought of lots of our own rhyming sentences. Using playdough Mia made a gorilla on a pillar, Senara made a dog in a bog on a frog and James and Teddy both made frogs on logs. In maths we have been learning the days of the week and the months of the year, we even know a song about them. As well we read the Gruffalo and made puppets, we then had a puppet show!

Class 1 learnt about shrove Tuesday and why we eat pancakes! We then had a go at making our own and put lemon juice and sugar on them.
We also learnt about pop up and sliding book and made our own sliding picture, they looked great!
Reception have been learning about estimating and had to guess how many objects there were. They also made their own sand timers, Xanders lasted 23 seconds!
Week commencing 10.02.20
This week class 1 have been learning about bears. Reception made bear masks and role played the life of a bear. We had a polar bear, grizzly bear and panda bear!
We have also been practicing counting in 2’s so we learnt about Noahs Ark and the animals coming on in 2’s.
We designed and made our own toys, Xander made a giant yo-yo!
We had our first snow day of the year! There were snow walls, snow elephants and snow blocks!
Week commencing 03.02.20
Lance and Iona have been learning about odd and even numbers, they practiced by throwing a ball and saying their numbers and if they were odd or even!
Reception and Iona were investigators! They were finding out what would be the best material to make an umbrella out of. They decided it was foam!
Reception have been learning about pairs and counting in twos. We read the story of Noahs Ark and counted animals two by two!
In gymnastics this week we were being squirrels! We did lots of different way of moving so we could move just like a squirrel!
We also made junk castles, they look amazing!
Week commencing 37.01.20
Reception have been using puppets to tell their own story of Paddington. Xander story involved Paddington floating to space in a bubble! The rest of the class have been writing story plans, there are some great stories!
Reception have been learning about repeating patterns, we even made patterns using musical instruments. They then made patterns again using different materials.
Everyone designed and made their own peg doll. There were some amazing ideas from a mermaid to an army man!
Everyone also learnt about how toys have changed over the years. They learnt that toys used to be made of metal and are much safer now.
Reception grouped different fruit according to their colour after we read a book about a rainbow, they were really good at this!
We were all ‘hurtling hedgehogs’ in gymnastics, practicing our rolling techniques while pretending to be a hedgehog.
Class 2 were helping class 1 learn how to use ‘scratch’. They were really good at showing them what to do, they made castles!
Week commencing 13.01.20
L.O. to learn about life in the 1950s.
We had a visitor from Beamish who told us what sort of TV programs and what games and toys children played with in 1950s. We learnt how to use an old fashioned phone and radio. We talked about how toys have changed since then.
Week commencing 06.01.20
This term class 1 are learning about toys. We have set up a toy shop for the children to use role play and practice using money.
Everyone brought their own favourite toy in so we could describe how they look and how they play with them. James brought his light saber and Xander brought a talking bear! Mrs Cowans brought some of her old toys for the children to look at as well.
In gymnastics they have been practicing using the equipment safely, they all practiced moving mats and benches.
Reception have been practicing doubling and halving, they made lady bird pictures by printing half of their picture.
They also have been learning about puppets, and started designing their own! Everyone enjoyed playing with the puppets and practicing to sew.
Week commencing 9.12.19
Reception have been using foam too understand too much, too little, more and less. We made cakes out of foam and decided if we needed more or less.
The whole school made a Christingle, we learnt what each part of it means, ready for the Christingle service on Friday.
Class 1 are also making their own houses out of shoe boxes, they are looking great!
Class 1 went to Beamish. We looked round the old school, the old miner’s cottages, made Christmas cookies, made peg angels, played parlour games and met the reindeer!
Week commencing 2.12.19
Reception have been learning about weight and putting objects in order. They had water balloons, ice balloons and normal balloons to compare. They have also been looking at what will float and predicting which objects will float.
The whole school helped to put up the Christmas tree, every person put up a decoration! The elves have also been getting up to snow good this week, they’ve been hiding behind the fan, playing in the snow and playing hop scotch! We have also set up a Christmas post office in class 1, they have all been practicing writing a letter to Santa.
Class 1 performed their gymnastics routine for the whole school and for parents. Well done you did a great job!
Week commencing 25.11.19
All of class 1 took part in a science experiment, to see how objects change their property once they have been smashed! They made their own boppers out of a cardboard tube and tested it on an orange segment, a crisp and a Lego brick.
Week commencing 18.11.19
Reception have been practicing counting objects using animal toys! They have been subtracting and adding toys to work out their answers.
Everyone has been learning about animal homes. We read a book about lots of different homes that animals live in and designed our own animal home. We used scrap material to construct our homes and also drew a picture of them.
Reception and year 1 read a book called ‘leaf man’. They all made their own leaf men and wrote about where they love to go. Charlie’s leaf man likes to go to lego land and Ioan’s likes to go to the moon!
The whole class made a house in the style of a collage. We used lots of different materials to make the different parts of the house. This is now up on display in class 1.
Iona and Lance have been learning about measurements and using different size containers to practice this.
Week commencing 11.11.19
Class 1 had a visit from OASES for our project called ‘Whispering Woods’. First of all they made wildlife viewers by drawing animals on paper and rolling them up. Then they went outside to look for different animals in their own habitats. We matched up features of birds to help us recognise them in the wild and then drew the animals we found and the location we found them on a plan of the school grounds.
The whole school took part in the remembrance service in the village to remember all those that have fought/ are fighting in the war.
Class 1 have been learning about the Great Fire of London this week. Reception drew pictures of the fire.
Children in need was on 12th November. The whole school took part in various activities including decorating gingerbread men and cupcakes, Pudsey colouring pages and bat the fish game where team ’kylie Jenner’ won.
We have also had a Russian teacher visiting. Class 1 are learning about different houses so he showed them all pictures of houses in his local village. He also read them traditional Russian nursery rhymes.
Week commencing 4.11.19
Reception were practicing recognising that even though they can’t see objects they are still there. They were in the bear cave with torches to practice this.
Year 1 and 2 have been working on shapes and making different shapes from another shape by cutting it up.
Reception and year 1 made firework pictures and thought of words that reminded them of bonfire night and year 2 wrote bonfire poems.
They all learnt about different materials and their properties. They sorted them into categories in the hoops and went on a hunt around the classroom finding different materials.
Reception made poppy pictures and everyone learnt about what the poppy stands for and why we wear it.
Week commencing 21.10.19
Class 1 have been writing an acrostic harvest poem.
They have also been practicing making 3D shapes out of playdough and straws.
We learnt about the difference between fruit and vegetables and used the schools apples from the apple tree to make the base of an apple crumble. They learnt how to peel an apple and chop it in the correct way.
Week commencing 14.10.19
Class 1 have been practicing a gymnastics routine ready for the dance festival.
They have also been doing different science experiments. One was looking at how you can hold a cup upside down full of water with card over the top. As well we have been looking at how to wash your hands properly and why we need to use soap by doing an experiment. One group washes powder paint off without soap and one with showing the importance of soap.
Reception drew their favourite African animal after learning about different animals.
We also visited Hamsterley forest as part of the whispering woods project. We listened to different animal sounds, made mud potions and did some forest bathing.
Week commencing 07.10.19
All of class 1 made autumn wallpaper in the style of William Morris. They used leaves and printers to make the wallpaper and used autumn colours
Reception and year 1 have been learning about 3D shapes. Measuring themselves with blocks and making rocket boats and robots out of 3D shapes.
They all also learned about different fruits after reading ‘Handas surprise’. Year 1&2 wrote about fruits in the story practicing using adjectives and reception drew a fruit basket.
They also took part in the first workshop for whispering woods learning about different animals, their habitats and how to protect animals in our changing world.
Week commencing 30.09.19
Class 1 were practicing printing using sponges and paints to make stories about shapes.
We were also learning about the 5 senses and played a game where they had to describe what they could feel in the bag so everyone could guess. They also played blind mans buff trying to guess who they were feeling.
Reception and year 1 were experimenting with instruments to learn about sounds, how to change them and how to describe them.
Class 1 children have been reading the Shape Trilogy books by Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen. They created a new story for the shapes by printing a picture with sponges and dark colours like the books and wrote up their stories which have been typed out for them.
Week Commencing 23.09.19
Reception have been using be bots to practice going along a number line in the hall. They also made porridge so we could share it out between 3 bowls and see how the quantity changes. The whole class had a visit from baby Joseph so we could understand how to look after a baby. They watched him have a bath and get dressed then asked lots of questions like ‘how often do you feed him?’ ‘whats his favourite toy?’.
Class 1 tried lots of new fruits to see what they like and dislike and give an opinion on it. They tried: Sharron fruit, lychee, papaya, kiwi fruit and passion fruit. There were mixed lots of mixed opinions. Iona liked them all but Jamie didn’t like any of them.
We have been practicing counting up to 20 using cubes and bowling. They both really enjoyed the bowling and were counting how many they had knocked down and how many they had left.
With the clay they were learning about themselves and were asked to make themselves. Xander decided to make a ‘pizzeria’ instead and Charlie made himself.
